Big news I forgot to share; H has been sleeping unswaddled for the last month or so. This is huge, people. I thought he would be sleeping swaddled through high school, when he had kids of his own, into retirement. I couldn't understand how he would grow out of the need.

And then he did.

BUT. With non swaddled sleep has come sleeping on his side. And with sleeping on his side has come: THE ATTACK OF THE LEAKEY DIAPERS.

It is a nightmare. He leaks out of two diapers a night. He goes through jammies like there is no tomorrow. He soaks up our bed sheets, and worst of all; he requires middle of the night diaper changes. (He hates being changed when he is sleepy, the poor thing.)

Is there anything to be done? We love our fuzzi bunz cloth during dipes the day, but have always used a single disposable at night. (Either 7th Gen or Earth's Best for no chlorine and all that.)

Help!

  1. Have you considered wool+ fitted for night? It's not as hard as it sounds... And Sbish dipes are magical... http://sloomb.myshopify.com/

  2. we use disposables, but as soon as cheech started sleeping on her side and also leaking (at two months!), i bit the bullet and bought the pampers extra protection diapers. they are miraculous! i was a little concerned because she, like her dad, has incredibly sensitive skin and we've had to put her in a sensitive diaper with aloe since birth... or she'll end up with irritation. but she's been fine with these diapers, and RARELY leaks.

when we were in hawaii, we ran out of pampers and could only find huggies overnites. she, again, developed irritation, and joe got a rash all over his hands and arms from handling the diapers. i know this is obviously not common, and like i said, they both do have very sensitive skin, but we're sticking to the pampers.

  4. We also use the Pampers extra protection diapers for overnight. Not a single leak since we started with them about a month ago!

  5. I really like my cloth diapers from different work at home mom businesses. Hyenacart has tons you can search for, new and used. Twinkie Tush Night Nights are supposed to be the ultimate to keeping babies dry at night. They are difficult to score but are enough diaper fluff to keep kiddos dry from infancy to toddlerhood. I have 4 fitteds from there and really love them. I really rec the previous suggestion of wool with a fitted. Or, maybe throw in an extra hemp/bamboo insert into the fuzzibunz?

  6. O uses Pampers at night too. He's a side sleeper too and he hasn't had a single leak yet.

  7. Why don't you use your Fuzzibunz double stuffed at night? I obviously have no personal experience with that, but I have read another blog that uses this method and doesn't seem to have had any issues. (If you poke around, there's lots of stuff on cloth diapers.)

  8. OKAY.

So if possible I would LOVE to switch to wool & fitted for night time, and ditch the disposables. (Though if it doesn't work out, it sounds like we will try the pampers extra protection.)

Can anyone with personal experience answer: if we wash dipes every other day, can we get away with 2 fitted and one wool cover? Assuming we wash the wool cover every morning, will it be dry by bedtime? Ok. Maybe we should just go ahead and get 2...

I tried double stuffed fuzzi buns... leak city...

  9. We use a Fuzzibunz with 1 regular insert and 1 hemp insert on top for the night time and very rarely have a problem (my daughter is just a little older than you guy). Double stuffing didn't work for us until we got the hemp insert -- we have 2, should probably get a 3rd.

  10. I would get two covers because drying time in the winter may take awhile, plus, if you get sick/busy and don't get it washed first thing, then you are delaying bedtime as you wait for it to dry (been there...). That said, often airing out the cover is enough to reuse it before washing as wool is antibacterial. Some fitteds are so absorbent the wool barely gets damp at all. 2-3 fitteds should quite comfortably set you up!

  11. I have wool covers and they don't need to be washed after a pee -- just aired out to dry. (I wash them when they get poop on them, which happens more often than I'd like.) You do need special lanolin soap to wash them.

You could squeak by with one cover, but I'd get a spare diaper or two.

I really like these fitteds for night - very absorbent, and pretty cheap too ($8).

I got the ones with snaps. They fit pretty trim, so if you buy a little big, you'd have room for another doubler if needed.

  12. Oh, I just remembered another trick, you can put covers in the spin cycle of the washer to speed up dry time!!

  13. OK, my little dude is only two months and change, so this might not last forever, but...I only get nighttime leaking with my Fuzzibunz or Bum Genius. I never get leaks with prefolds and covers. We have more prefolds but I always assumed we'd switch to either BG or FB after being annoyed at the folding/pinning, but it's been the reverse. The folding is easy once you get the hang of it, and the others are only used when the rest are in the wash.

  14. a few ideas:

    1. double diaper ... that's what we do and it's great

    2. put an extra (cloth) insert into the disposable

    3. for his bedding do a first layer of mattress pad, then fitted sheet, and then another layer of mattress pad, and another fitted sheet. makes middle of the night changing much easier ...

  15. I think you could squeak by with one wool cover (as you don't have to wash them every morning) but you would be better off with two. I would also recommend maybe one or two fitteds more. I personally use a fleece or hemp pocket under a wool cover and pee doesn't go anywhere!! (We were having leak issues before that). I know your local, so I suggest you go to Baby Frenzy. It's a shop owned by the makers of Happy Heineys cloth diapers. They are super helpful and carry wool and wool care items.

  16. maja has always slept on her side and rarely leaks through her cloth diapers. i'm pretty sure i can count the amount of times she has, and they've only been light leaks. i also have stopped changing her throughout the night. changing her would wake her, even more, and make it more difficult to put her back to sleep. she goes about 8 hours without a change and, like i said, rarely leaks.

  17. thanks guys!!!!!

we borrowed a fitted and tried it with a wool cover we already had, worked great!

then we tried just pulling the cover over the fuzzi's and it worked even better!

  18. we use fuzzi bunz too, but my daughter is a total pisser and leaks through during naps so we compromise and use 2 disposables a day. we had to get the huggies overnites for bedtime because she pees so much. i find huggies don't have that perfume smell like pampers do, so we have stuck with those.
