You guys, I am wild about traditions, but honestly my small family doesn’t have many. That’s OK, we are starting fresh! A few years ago Ben and I got into the tradition of buying our tree on my birthday weekend (the first weekend in December.) (Although this year we bought a small potted pine that we plan to use again until it is so big it has to be planted- so the tradition next year will just be to bring it inside and decorate it.) My pal Naurnie posted about her family’s tradition of her mom giving her and her sister a Christmas book each year, and I love it! I am starting this year with Margaret Wise Brown’s Christmas In the Barn (the original illustrations), because Goodnight Moon is our favorite.
What are some of your favorite holiday traditions?
Favorite holiday books? I would love to hear, I need to be ready for next year!

  2. I am not starting any Xmas traditions this year, our 2nd Xmas, but I just wanted to say that I LOVE MW Brown and the many illustrators she worked with. I have just discovered how amazing Sailor Dog and Mister Dog are, illustrated by Garth Williams. And lately Goodnight Moon is AMAZING. It's weird, because we always liked it, then it fell out of fashion, but it's back in a huge way now that Dax is learning to talk and sign. Dax used to find the stars and air page horribly boring, but now that he can sign "stars," it looks like he's disco dancing when we get there.

I like the tree tradition. Seems like a great thing to share with a kid too.

  3. I read Naurnie's post too and I'm totally stealing her tradition. Haven't decided yet on the book for baby's 1st Christmas.

Also, a potted Christmas tree? Brilliant. And is it maybe more stable? As in less likely for the cat or baby to knock it over? I'm kinda intimidated by the whole xmas tree scene now that we have a dog, a cat, AND a baby to referee.

  4. In our family, on christmas morning the tradition has always been that I hand out the presents from beneath the christmas tree. When I was in my early teens, I asked my little brother if he would like to take over.. I thought he'd be thrilled, but he just looked at me and said, "but I CANT! YOU have to do it, it's TRADITION!" Im 24 now, and I still hand out the presents :P

"Merry Christmas Big Hungry Bear" is a great childrens christmas book :)

ps we also have a potted christmas tree! only we dug ours up from the hillside- we live in NZ now, where pine trees are considered a pest. so at christmas time, trees are free!
