Henry is on the verge of saying Mama (we think. Or maybe he is already saying it, and we just don't realize that the intent is there, you know? Or maybe it is like a year off and all the mamamama is meaningless babble). So his ability to learn and understand and repeat language has been on my mind.
So.... What all do we call boobs, and nursing time? (To those babies who go on to nurse into an age when they might start to verbalize it, just a little.) Henry's caregiver calls it to her's "ney-neys", and a girl friend calls it "num nums", explaining that her older daughter started running around asking for "boobs". I don't go in for anything too cutesy, but yeah, I am thinking I don't want him running around asking for my "boobs" in the future. I'd love to know what you call it!

"Nom nom" makes sense! On the subject of H. saying "mama," have you seen this video? So cute!
ReplyDeletei have a friend whose son calls them "the nurse."
ReplyDelete"i want to touch the nurse!" he exclaimed one day, after he had already weaned himself but still wanted to hold one of her boobs for comfort.
ha.
Jamie, I could never do any of those cutesy terms either - paci, nummy nums, ect. Just wasn't me. Call me boring, but I always referred to it as "milk" :)
ReplyDeleteWe also call it just "milk" along with the sign for milk. Seems to work fine and if he does it in public no one really notices because he is just asking for a drink.
ReplyDeleteoh, hard question. i know a lot of my friends opt for using the word for boob, or breast in another language. seemed like an okay idea until my niece was shouting TETAS! in a predominantly spanish speaking church in northern new mexico during a funeral. so careful with that one. nonsense words seem like the might be the best, as long as they're not too cutsey.
ReplyDeletei know someone who used neh-nehs, which i thought was kinda cute until he took to shouting for NEH-NEHS while grabbing at his mom's chest!!! at that point he might as well have been shouting BOOBIES because neh-nehs was no longer subtle. i think i like shannon's suggestion above... "milk" with using the sign for milk. think i'm going to try that (not that i have to worry about this any time soon, but you know, us moms like to plan things out in advance ;)
ReplyDeleteMilk seems to be the best option.
ReplyDelete"The nurse!" had me laughing out loud...
ReplyDeleteI also just came to this realization and since we are trying out sign language I've started asking T if he wants milk rather than boobie.
we are also planning to say milk with the sign for milk..pretty boring but I like it like that ;)
ReplyDeletemy sister in law (and niece) say "mama's milk".
ReplyDeleteanother "milk" user over here. he hasn't said it yet, but has been signing it for a few months. but i definitely only refer to my breasts as milk, i mean... i just can't with the bah bahs and num nums. "ya want some milk, baby?"
ReplyDeleteI am also not to keen on the baby talk. I just call it "nursing" and use the sign for it.
ReplyDeleteWe call it Milky.
ReplyDeletei just realized today that dax is calling my nipples "pee-pees." He calls belly buttons and freckles pee-pees too... What is in store for us?!
ReplyDeleteI went with "boob" and wasn't too stressed out by public requests but my kid was pretty quiet about it. At an LLLC meeting I went to, one of the women taught her daughter to say/sign milk, until they needed to distinguish between cow milk and breastmilk, at which point her daughter (under 2) started calling it "mommy's milk" herself and requesting it LOUDLY in public. I'm pretty sure it's embarassing no matter what they say if they say it loud enough. I think that's why many people get creeped out about nursing once kids start to talk.
ReplyDeleteWe call it milkshakes... Qs not quite talking yet, and I hope it doesn't confuse him when he lines up at a cafe for a milkshake!!
ReplyDeletewe called it a " booboo". do you want a boo boo? haha
ReplyDelete-m
he also called it a "boo"
