It's getting down to the wire here and seeing as I'm not the best at working under pressure, I'm trying to get as much as possible organized now. "Take home outfit" kept popping up in all the books and not only was it something I would have never thought of (what, after ALL the money we're going to be paying, the hospital won't at least be giving us some snazzy baby ensemble?), but quite honestly, I didn't really know what exactly a take home outfit was. I guess some people just get this stuff, but I've spent about two thirds of my pregnancy googling everything under the sun.

So, armed with my newfound knowledge I decided to do some shopping yesterday and get this baby's first official outfit in order. And of course, as soon as I walk into the baby store I'm bombarded with overwhelming amounts of blue and pink. What gives? It must really suck to be a baby considering you only have two color options. However, I was determined and I was going to walk out of that store with something, anything, even if it killed me. I started searching through their ever so tiny selection of gender-neutral items when I noticed the sizing. Some labels said 0-3 months, while others said 0-6 months. Umm... I was under the impression that was a pretty hefty size difference. Sh*t, where was google when I really needed it... maybe having a smart phone isn't such a bad idea after all. So I did what any intelligent pregnant lady would do and started holding the tiny sizes against my belly to get a better idea of what would actually fit my baby. Luckily, one of the saleswomen caught my ridiculous technique and decided to offer me some help. "Ohhhh, you need to be in the newborn section", she said. I thought the sizes were small before, but these newborn sizes looked like they'd barely fit a kitten. She must have seen the look of panic on my face because she quickly explained that these tiny pieces would even fit babies in the 8-9 pound range. A 10 pound baby, however would need something bigger... but that was "very, very rare". I decided to keep quiet about my predicament. She showed me some onesies, tops, pants, and accessories and shared that 2 piece outfits were usually easier for first time parents because they wouldn't have to deal with dozens of tiny snaps for diaper changes. YES, "easier" was exactly what I was going for.

In the end, I bought these pants and a matching hat, but in the chocolate color instead of the orange. I couldn't decide on a top. I guess I liked the pants enough, but didn't love them. And when I showed them to Joe, and his first words were "our baby's going to look like it broke out of prison", I decided I should keep searching. I found this cute little outfit on Sweet Peanut this morning. I like that it doesn't look like it lost a fight with a gang of pastels, so it's definitely a contender. Let me know if you guys have any recommendations for shops/sites that carry simple, gender-neutral clothing in newborn sizes. Apparently, not everyone makes newborn.

(WOW, did I really just write a 3-paragraph post on take home outfits?!)

  1. I don't have any shop/site recommendations right now (I might be back with some, though), but I would recommend taking a couple different sized outfits to the hospital. Like maybe some newborn and some 0-3 months. My cousin's baby ended up being 10lbs 4oz, and almost none of the newborn clothes she'd bought/been given fit him.

    (Those pants are cute. Joe doesn't know what he's talking about. Especially if you pair them with a solid-coloured onesie.)

  5. those are so cute!!! I love the colors so so much. I got this kimono from Sckoon - http://www.sckoon.com/er-orco36.html because it seemed really easy and it's pretty cute. we only live like 3 blocks from the hospital so to me it's not that huge of a deal. I just want him to look cute and be comfortable. {plus I heard kimonos are livesavers those first few weeks!}

  7. i'm due on the 19th of april and set out today with one goal in mind "get a take home outfit!" and it was supposed to be fun with lots of cooing over cute baby things. but i came home empty handed after having a bit of a moment with the sales lady where i vented about the lack of unisex clothing. what i really want to do is bring one girl outfit and one boy outfit (nothing too pink or blue or tacky, just something a little more gender specific than green and yellow), but we'll see if i can get organized enough to make that happen!

  8. I had no idea take home outfits existed, whoa. I guess I assumed the baby was in a onesie and blanket the hospital provided? Sheesh, shows how much I know.

  9. Man, I feel your pain - it's so hard to find clothes in normal colours. Although it's a long way away you could look at www.naturebaby.co.nz - you can order online and they do ship internationally and when you convert the currency the clothes are cheap cheap cheap.

  10. @kate i know, right? i was shocked to find out the hospital doesn't provide some sort of onesie or anything.

    thanks for your recommendations, guys. joe's come around and now likes the pants and hat i picked out. sometimes i think he gives me a hard time for shits and giggles. ;) now all i need is a top.

  11. see. i thought they DID. in fact i know some do. we were going through all the old baby clothes for the boys i used to nanny and their mom *mentioned it*. (which led to a slightly awkward convo about the fact that our guy wouldn't be born in the hospital...) but she still had the outfit.

  12. I was so desperate to get out of the hospital after 5 days that I didn't even notice what they were wearing, I just grabbed them and ran. Also, they were a tonne smaller than I was expecting and nothing fitted them.

    When I got home it turned out that Amelia WAS wearing a hospital onesie that they had put her in on the intensive care ward.

    True story: one woman on my ward had bought her baby an actual convict outfit with 'been inside for 9 months' written on the front. Thank fuck it was far too big for the poor kid.
